Colonial Figures from the Baoulé Tribe of the Ivory Coast, West Africa. Hand crafted from solid wood, and painted simply, they retain a charming raw look.

Traditionally a Baoulé woman would have a carving made of her "spirit lover", an idealised vision of her future husband, who would have attributes such as strength or athleticism. The influences of the colonial period in Africa changed what was most desired in a husband, so they began to make carvings in this Western-inspired style, depicting modern occupations such as dotors, priests or businessmen.
